Communication with / engaging WP students and graduates

Working out what language to use when communicating and seeking to engage certain groups of students can be a challenge and many are concerned not to use inappropriate or possibly offensive terminology. Unfortunately there is no nationally agreed guidance on this. Different HE providers use different protocols to communicate with different groups of students so your team will need to explore what channels exist within your institution, and perhaps review this with Students’ Union groups to confirm the most effective methods and language or terminology to use.

  • Do you have a student engagement/comms team in your service or no dedicated resource?
  • Exploring the student voice – student focus groups and other student groups
  • Consider linking to Students’ Union or student-led mentoring and peer to peer schemes

“There are current plans to create a university-wide student communications schedule which we in Careers worry will start to limit our opportunities to email specific groups of students if we need to promote targeted activities. The suggestion is that if it’s not on the pre-approved annual comms plan, we won’t be able to do it.”
