The winner of the AGCAS Supporting Student/Graduate Employability Award 2018 is Wrexham Glyndŵr University for their development of the new flexible summer programme, Make Summer Work for You (MSW4U).

During 2017 Wrexham Glyndŵr University’s Careers and Employability team successfully delivered MSW4U. The design of this programme was based on the view that successful employability outcomes go beyond a traditional programme of skills and knowledge development, acknowledging that how a student or graduate is feeling is also key to being successful. The flexibility of the programme allowed students to grow in confidence at the right time for them, and at their own pace.

The MSW4U programme attracted 80% more students, compared to the graduate support workshops offered in 2016: of these 34 students had never previously engaged with the team. Of those who attended 100% felt more positive about themselves and/or their future. Feedback from participants such as, ‘the tutor presented with such empathy … I wish it could carry on as it’s been life changing’ has led to the Careers and Employability team now leading a new pilot project across the whole university to help support the wellbeing and retention of students, adopting elements of the MSW4U programme.

Judges comments

The service took a holistic, innovative approach identifying through research what the issues were. There was clear engagement with students and an innovative use of feedback. There was clear impact and a focus on the whole person. Staff were willing to upskill and step out of their comfort zone.
