Raising the standard of work experience opportunities consultation

In response to the pandemic and loss of work experience opportunities for students and graduates, AGCAS convened a cross-sector group to prevent the proliferation of exploitative opportunities (primarily unpaid internships) marketed at students and graduates. The group consists of a number of university and employer representatives, including ASET, ISE, Rate My Placement, Jisc, Universities UK, and many others.

The group has identified two separate components that will work together to raise that standard of work experience opportunities and ensure that we, as a sector, are promoting fair and valuable experiences to our students and graduates.

  1. The Work Experience Standard: the minimum requirements for a work experience opportunity that we expect to be met in order for an opportunity to be advertised to students.
  2. The Good Practice Guide: A supplementary overview of good practice that we would hope all employers who recruit students/graduates should aim to work towards, or exceed.

We need AGCAS members’ feedback to evaluate whether the standard and guide will meet the stated aim of raising the standard of work experience for students and graduates, and to further develop and amend both tools.
