Vacancy on the Research Students and Research Staff Task Group

The AGCAS Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff Task Group are seeking a new member to join our enthusiastic task group. The opportunity will be for 10 months from May 2019 to March 2020.

The key focus of our group is to support AGCAS members working with early career researchers, both PhD students and research staff, in order to develop and share expertise, professional practice and resources in this specialist area of provision. Membership is an excellent way for someone who has been in the area some time to share their experience with other passionate people and for newer members to develop their network and confidence.


Task group recent activity

  • We produce a quarterly digest sharing news, resources, and practice with the aim of helping careers practitioners involved in supporting research students or research staff.
  • We have run 3 successful AGCAS conferences for practitioners in 2015, 2016 and 2017, offered a workshop at AGCAS national conference in 2018, and will be doing a webinar this month for interested members on supporting researchers in their careers.
  • We have published research on academic careers, as a task group and in collaboration with
  • We have created a bank of resources to support careers practitioners in working with researchers, and we develop and maintain links with other groups involved in researcher development, including Vitae.

What we are looking for

We recognise that AGCAS members working with researchers often work with both postgraduate researchers (PGR) and research staff and encourage applications from staff with joint or single remits. We also wish to encourage applications from staff at smaller universities or those for whom researchers is only part of their remit or who have other diverse interests possibly in information, work experience or employer liaison.

Additionally, we are looking for individuals who:

  • Have ideas to further develop our task group strategy and outputs
  • Have experience and expertise in supporting researchers, i.e. PGR students and / or research staff
  • Can commit to attending 3 meetings per year, 2 of which are face to face
  • Are able to devote time to developing resources, and taking part in organising and/or delivering training.
