Vacancies on Legal Profession Task Group

12 December 2019

The AGCAS Legal Profession Task Group is seeking to recruit three new members: a Chair-elect, a Secretary-elect and a regular member.

About the group

The group currently comprises seven full time members, two part time members and meets two or three times a year (usually in June and December, occasionally in spring) to keep up to date with the changes in the profession, and to discuss issues affecting graduate recruitment ranging from diversity to application procedures to qualification routes.  We are supported in our endeavours by wide representation from others in the legal sector who also attend our meetings. Through this we have established close working relationships with representatives from the Bar Standards Board (BSB), the Bar Council, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA), The Law Society including the Junior Lawyers Division (JLD), the Council of the Inns of Court, legal publishers, law firms and legal education providers.

The legal sector is undergoing a considerable amount of change at present and this has kept the Task Group very busy.  With the planned roll out of the Solicitors' Qualifying Examination (SQE) and the Future Bar Training initiative, we expect it to remain so.  It is therefore very important to us that any new member has the support of their Service in allowing them to make a full contribution to this group.

In recent times our activities have included:  formal responses to major consultations on the SQE and Future Bar Training, working with the SRA on a guidance “toolkit” for the introduction of SQE, running a successful training event on “Law & Technology” and attending the Bar Council Pupillage Fair. On occasion, these have required Task Group members to work the odd Saturday or evening.

What we are looking for

We are an active and enthusiastic group and are keen to welcome new members who share our interest in the legal profession and in supporting students to secure careers in this field.

We are looking for applicants who would be interested in becoming:

  • A Chair–elect, who would join the group as a regular member with a view to becoming Chair in Dec 2020/Jan 2021
  • A Secretary–elect, who would join the group as a regular member with a view to becoming Secretary in Dec 2020/Jan 2021
  • A regular team member

Chair’s Role

  • Chair meetings of AGCAS Task Group – meetings are twice a year in London. They are divided into two parts. In the morning, the AGCAS Task Group Careers Advisers are joined by representatives from SRA, BSB, Council of the Inns of Court, Bar Council, Legal Publishers, CILEX, Law firms etc. – approximately 20 people. The agenda is sent out in advance and currently follows a standard format. The afternoon is just for the Careers Advisers – where we discuss any relevant issues and plan any activity.
  • Handle any initial enquiries which come in from AGCAS members or interested parties (e.g. CILEX, legal professionals etc.) and share out any tasks amongst the group
  • Liaise with AGCAS Membership Manager and attend an annual meeting for Task Group leads.
  • Devise the annual strategy document (standardised form) and a mid-year interim report on our progress for the group – with input from the Task Group.
  • Contribute to the group in the same way as all members as below

Secretary’s Role

  • Organise venues and arrange any logistics for twice yearly meetings. Usually these are hosted at the Bar Council and the Law Society and our contacts are well established.
  • Invite all (existing and any new) members to the meetings
  • Coordinate the contributions made by our partners ahead of each meeting and circulate the notes to everyone attending.
  • Support the Chair
  • Contribute to the group in the same way as all members as below

Member’s Role

  • Attend meetings twice a year
  • Take responsibility for the following tasks: writing follow up notes, creating and delivering training sessions, writing newsletters (twice a year), attending fairs, sharing knowledge, following up contacts and information, updating resources, responding to consultations and sharing news at meetings.

Please be assured that whatever role you have, this is a group that shares out activities and supports one another.

We are very keen to make sure that we have members coming from across the UK regions and devolved nations. We would particularly welcome applicants based in and around London.

Interested?

Please feel free to contact Juliet Tomlinson with any questions about the group or for an informal conversation.

Please also feel free to contact any of the group members if you would like to find out more. Contact details can be found in the Member Directory

How to apply

If you are interested in becoming a member of the group, please submit a short statement (guideline around 700 words), explaining your motivations in joining the group/role, any relevant experience and what you believe you could contribute to the Task Group.  Please send as a word document  to volunteering@agcas.org.uk by 17:00 on 13 January 2020.  We aim to communicate the outcome by Friday 7 February.

The next meeting will take place in London on 4th June 2020 and we hope the new members will be able to join us.
