Call for Phoenix articles: supporting international students

11 August 2019

The October 2019 issue of Phoenix, the AGCAS journal, will explore how HE careers services are supporting international students as they prepare to transition from higher education into employment. This edition aims to showcase good practice by highlighting the wide range of initiatives delivered at AGCAS member services throughout the UK and will complement the research AGCAS is undertaking on behalf of Universities UK International (UUKi).

We are inviting articles from the wide variety of functions within HE careers and employability services, and from employers and other stakeholders, to address the areas highlighted below.

1) Service delivery

How are you:
  • tailoring careers and employability provision to ensure relevance to international students?
  • engaging international students with careers and employability support/promoting your services to international students?
  • facilitating opportunities for international students to find part time work or undertake work experience during their studies (e.g. through the provision of placements/internships)?
  • supporting international students to undertstand the global labour market and to job hunt/find work after their studies?
  • targeting support and resources to best serve specific cohorts of international students (e.g. Chinese students, Indian students)?
  • helping international students to develop networks and contacts (e.g. through mentoring schemes, international alumni)?
  • empowering international students to overcome any employment challenges they may face on returning home?
  • providing pre-arrival support or advice to international students?
  • working with colleagues across your institution to facilitate international students' participation in co-curricular or extracurricular activities?

 2) Employer engagement

How are you:
  • supporting the integration of international students in the workplace?
  • advising on the recruitment of international graduates (including visa regulations/options for working in the UK after graduation)?
  • encouraging employers to consider employing international students?
  • facilitating opportunities for international students to meet employers and gain access to UK businesses/the business community?

3) Case studies:

  • Do you have examples of challenges, successes or your own personal learning from working with international students that might benefit/inspire other AGCAS members/the HE sector/employers?
