We are looking for qualified and experienced Careers Advisers and Coaches to join our Freelance team which provides support for trainee doctors and dentists in London and Kent, Surrey and Sussex.  The role will be to provide individual coaching and/or careers advice/coaching to trainee doctors at any stage from Foundation to gaining their Certificate of Competence in Training (CCT).  The types of cases will cover anything from supporting: specialty choice decisions during foundation and core training; preparing for the consultant interview; decisions about changes in specialty choice; decisions about balancing careers with family, maternity physical, research, mental health and other interests; strategies for dealing with issues affecting successful career progression such as workplace relationships, exam performance and other assessments, confidence etc.

The Careers Unit has produced a range of resources some of which are published on the e-learning for healthcare website where you can currently access the Career Planning for Foundation Doctors as well as a module on Coaching Support for Education Supervisors.  We will shortly be adding Career Planning modules for Pharmacists, Core Medicine Doctors, Core Psychiatry Doctors and Core Surgery Doctors as well as resources to support the Consultant Interview – which will be hosted on our website.

Coaches will undertake introductory conversations with prospective clients who will have referred themselves to the service and will conduct up to four career or general coaching sessions with each client.  Whilst no case notes are expected to be produced coaches will be asked to produce anonymised data about the source of the clients and the themes of the issues raised in the sessions.

We are particularly interested to hear from:

Qualified Careers Advisers who:

  • have worked with undergraduates in any of the professional healthcare courses and if possible medical students.
  • can demonstrate an interest in healthcare and medical career pathways.
  • have worked with postgraduate medical trainees in a careers support capacity and may also have a background in medicine.

Qualified coaches who:

  • have experience of coaching clinicians
  • are medically qualified
