Careers Consultant

Key Information

The University of Law | Manchester

£35,000 - £35,000

Application Deadline: 19 February 2020

Vacancy Description:

The University of Law is one of the UK’s leading providers of legal education and training, working right at the heart of the legal profession. We bring together teaching of the highest quality, a focus on practical skills and innovative learning styles to deliver perfect preparation for life in legal practice and ongoing professional development.

We are in an ongoing, exciting period of growth and expansion, as a result of that we are looking for outstanding people to join our committed and passionate team of professionals.

Careers Consultant - 14 hours per week (0.4 FTE)

This new Careers Consultant role will involve working as a member of the Careers Team within the Employability Service on the Manchester Campus. The Employability Service is a critical feature within the University and involves interaction with prospective students and their parents/guardians, current students and alumni. It necessitates interaction with a number of other stakeholders, particularly the employer community. The Careers Consultant will assist in the local delivery of careers education, information, advice and guidance to current students. Some elements of this support will also be relevant for prospective and former students. In addition, there is a key role in building and developing relationships with local employers to create opportunities for many forms of employer engagement.

Given the broad reach of the Employability Service there is also a need for close working relationships with colleagues in many departments across the campus and indeed across other ULaw campuses. Thus the ability to engage with a diverse range of people is a key attribute. This is an exciting time to be joining the Employability Service as the University expands its portfolio of courses and responds to the changing legal qualification landscape. This is likely to include opportunities to contribute to the increased employability content built into courses - design/development and delivery in the classroom.

Careers Consultants on ULaw campuses come from a variety of backgrounds. This includes qualified careers advisers (with and without prior experience advising law students), qualified legal and non-legal professionals looking to use their skills and knowledge in Higher Education, those who have experience and expertise in HR/Learning and Development roles, those with a background in recruitment, as well as those demonstrating transferable skills from a range of other roles. Applicants without a careers background but with an interest in qualifying are therefore encouraged to apply.

For an informal discussion about the role, please contact Catherine Morgan on 01483 216250 or email Catherine.Morgan@law.ac.uk

Interviews will be held on 27 and 28 February 2020.

No agencies please.

Some posts within the University are subject to a DBS check - you will be notified of this during the application process.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons. However, as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals are currently under-represented within the University - which does not reflect our diverse student body - we would particularly welcome applications from BAME candidates. All appointments will be made on merit.
