Register of Practitioners

In February 2006, the AGCAS Board started to look at the possibility of establishing a voluntary Register of Practitioners . This would not be a statutory register, such as those controlling teachers and doctors, but would nevertheless demonstrate a level of professional competence and expertise.

A survey of AGCAS Heads of Service in summer 2006 supported the establishment of a register and a small task group started work on developing a model. This model has been piloted and the resulting report circulated to the AGCAS Board and to heads of service. The Board’s decision to continue working towards a register shows a commitment to quality for practitioners, services and clients. The report is available to read below.

Next steps

The next stage in the development of the register is to trial and establish the assessment process. What can a register do for us? 



From the survey of heads of service, plus discussions with many other professional bodies, the main benefits of a register are:
 


• improves standing of the wide range of professional roles within AGCAS
   member services;

• provides recognition for individual practitioners; 

• provides evidence towards matrix Accreditation;
• provides evidence for job evaluation processes; 

• provides a framework for professional development; 

• recognises and maintains professional standards;

• provides increased credibility with clients, within the institution and within
   the profession; 

• encourages CPD.


 Key aspects of the proposed model



-It will be an inclusive model with the register open to all members, regardless of job role. There will be three possible entry routes:
 


• having the appropriate professional qualification(s) for your role; 

• providing evidence of competency in your role;

• using a combination of other qualifications, or out of date qualifications
   together with either supplementary evidence of current competency or of
   relevant CPD.



Applications for entry will be assessed by trained assessors. To retain registration, members will be required to produce evidence of CPD on a three-yearly cycle. Registered practitioners will receive a higher level of membership benefit.

Links to matrix and quality generally

• Focus on the individual practitioner rather than the service or the client.
• AGCAS Quality and Membership Advisory Group (QMAG) and the Board
   support the development of the register as an accompaniment that
   dovetails with matrix .
• Offers evidence of CPD and staff appraisal for the matrix Accreditation
   process.
