This three-day NASES residential focuses on strategies for effective management within the context of career, placement and employability services.
This course is suitable for participants who are already in management roles, as well as those whose work involves an element of management and delivery in work-related learning, career education, information, advice, guidance, employer liaison or employability development.
The course aims to explore a variety of dimensions of management from managing tasks, teams, individuals and yourself to managing strategically in complex institutional contexts. It looks at management within your particular department as well as managing beyond it, considering partnerships, strategic alliances and external profile. It focuses on critically assessing and integrating management frameworks, tools and techniques with your experience and practice. It will develop ownership of new ideas and values in relation to management and the confidence to use these back in the workplace.
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:• Describe recent trends in service delivery of careers, employability and placement and the implications for service management;
• Explain the distinction between management and leadership, within the context of these trends;
• Critically assess individual values, strengths and weaknesses in the management of careers, employability and placement services;
• Explain the impact of management on defining and implementing strategy, using a theoretical framework;
• Identify and describe a range of tools and techniques that can be used in managing human, IT physical and financial resources and consider how you would integrate these with your work;
• Analyse opportunities to manage beyond your service in the wider institutional context and develop your own responses to this.
This course is available as a 20-credit module on the AGCAS/Warwick MA/PG Diploma in Career Education Information and Guidance in Higher Education and the NASES/Warwick MA/PG Diploma in the Management of Student Work Experience. It can also be taken as a standalone postgraduate award worth 20 credits by AGCAS members or non-members not currently registered on the MA/PG Diploma.
