AGCAS Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff Task Group recruiting four new members

The AGCAS Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff Task Group are seeking four new members. The key focus of the group is to support AGCAS members working with early career researchers, both PhDS and research staff, in order to develop and share expertise, professional practice and resources in this specialist area of provision.

Membership is an excellent way for someone who has been in the area some time to share their experience with other passionate people and for newer members to quickly develop their network and confidence. With many Universities aiming to increase their PhD student numbers and uncertainty in politics this is an exciting time to join the group.

Why four members?

Our strategy, informed by revisions in AGCAS rules for Task Groups and matching to the five pillars of AGCAS strategy; Learning, Advocacy, Research and knowledge, Quality and Community has led us to seek four new members as follows:

•    One to replace the remaining founder member
•    One to take a one year slot of maternity cover
•    Two newly created roles which we hope will help to diversify the group.

Recent activity and future plans

We have run three successful AGCAS conferences for practitioners in 2015, 2016 and 2017 attracting around 50 to 60 practitioners to each. The most recent was AGCAS Supporting PhD students and research staff: Professional Identity, Partnership and Practise London on 14 June 2017. We develop and maintain links with other groups involved in researcher development, including Vitae, Learned Societies and engage in social media forums discussing researcher development and published helpful research on academic careers. One example can be viewed here.

Who might apply?

We are very keen to hear from individuals who have ideas to further develop our task group strategy and outputs, experience and expertise in the area, a varied network and social media skills. You need to be able to attend three meetings per year, two of which are face to face and commit to a three year tenure with the exception of one vacancy which is maternity cover of one year.

We recognise that AGCAS members working with researchers often work with both PGRs and research staff and would encourage applications from staff with joint or single remits. We also wish to encourage applications from staff at smaller Universities or those for whom researcher clients are only part of their remit or who have other diverse interests possibly in information, work experience or employer liaison.

How to apply

If you are interested in becoming a member, please submit a CV and a brief declaration of interest including your main motivations for joining the group. Please also send a confirmation of commitment to either a three year tenure OR the maternity cover one year fixed term, plus agreement to attendance at meetings to Josie Grindulis, Chair of Agcas Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff Task Group by Friday 4 August. For a more informal chat please get in touch with either:

•    Josie Grindulis – 029 20879390
•    Sharon Maguire – 0131 651 1582
