    Does Self-Employment Measure Entrepreneurship?

    This discussion paper examines the relationship between urban and rural self-employment, innovation and entrepreneurship. It uses data from the UK Labour Force Survey (LFS) combined with data from the Business Structure Database (BSD) and the Community Innovation Survey (CIS). The paper investigate how the incidence of self-employment correlates with the density of business start-ups and innovative firms.

    Differences by Degree

    This paper uses labour force data to estimate the correlation between earnings and educational qualifications in England and Wales. It provides econometric estimates of the effects of the key determinants of wages and uses these estimates to compute private financial rates of return. The paper concludes that a large rise in tuition fees across all subjects has only a modest impact on relative rates of return.

    University performance is often evaluated according to a limited set of indicators. Such narrow valuations ignore the role universities play in building a stronger and more tolerant society – both directly through public outreach and indirectly through the student university experience. This report aims to challenge the assumption that their value to society is marginal.

    Degrees of Doubt: Is university worth the investment?

    This study examines recent trends in the graduate labour market, assessing changes in the employment destination of recent university leavers, compared with those who choose vocational qualifications rather than higher education.
