Learning from Futuretrack: studying and living at home

This report presents findings from a study investigating the characteristics and outcomes of students who lived at home and away from home while at university. It uses data from Futuretrack, which is a longitudinal study of all people who applied in 2005 to 2006 to enter university in the UK during the autumn of 2006. Futuretrack collected data from students before, during and after their time at university.

The study was conducted in two stages. The first descriptive stage aimed to give an overview of differences in the motivations, characteristics and outcomes between students (the respondents) who lived at home and who lived away from home while at university. The second modelling stage then examined whether the differences in outcomes between respondents who lived at home and away from home were statistically significant after controlling for a range of respondent and institutional characteristics.
