Medical Students' Finance Survey 2010-11

The British Medical Association's (BMA) Health Policy and Economic Research Unit undertakes an annual survey of medical students' finances on behalf of the Medical Students Committee. This report is the 24th report and presents the results of the 2010/11 survey comparing the results from previous surveys where possible. This year's finance survey received a high response, with over 2,800 medical students responding.

Key findings include:

• Almost all respondents reported some level of credit card, bank loan, student loan or overdraft debt.
• Respondents in their final year of study (defined as those expecting to graduate in 2010) reported an average level of total debt of £24,092, with the highest level of total debt reported as £71,000.
• 70% of respondents reported that they had received money from sources other than their student loan and the average amount received was £3,869.
• The biggest source of income for students other than student loans was family and friends.
• Medical students are less likely to report a positive level of earnings from work during term-time and during vacations compared to students undertaking other courses.
• Respondents with a main family breadwinner from a semi-skilled or unskilled background reported the highest average final year debt of £37,588.
